About

Greta Uehling

Greta Uehling is a cultural anthropologist who specializes in the study of war, conflict, and population displacement. A Professor at the University of Michigan, she teaches seminars on human rights and humanitarianism for the Program in International and Comparative Studies.

In addition to teaching, Uehling has consulted with international organizations like the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) where she worked in the Evaluation and Policy Analysis Unit and the United Nations High Commissioner for National Minorities.

Named after the globe-trotting Swedish actress Greta Garbo, she has traveled and worked in many regions.

With Everyday War, Uehling sought to challenge conventional ideas about the role of civilians in contemporary wars. Her forthcoming book will show readers how understanding Crimea is essential for understanding Ukraine – and the war with Russia – today.
